AI Healthcare: Remote Surgery and Robotic-Assisted Procedures

Bernhard Kainz is Reader for medical image computing in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London where he leads the human-in-the-loop computing group and co-leads the biomedical image analysis research group and he is a full professor at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg where he heads the Image Data Exploration and Analysis (IDEA) Lab. Bernhard’s research is dedicated to developing novel image processing methods that augment human decision-making capabilities, with a focus on bridging the gaps between modern computing methods and clinical practice.

Bernhard’s scientific drive is documented with over 150 scientific publications in the field. He has worked as a scientific advisor for ThinkSono Ldt./GmbH., Ultromics Ldt., Cydar medical Ldt., co-founded Fraiya Ldt, and was a clinical imaging scientist at St. Thomas’ Hospital London. He is an IEEE Senior Member, associate editor for the journals IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and Medical Image Analysis, and has won several awards, prizes, and honours, including seven best paper awards. In 2023, his research was awarded an ERC Consolidator grant.

A specialist in Computer Vision for Biomedical Engineering with 4 years of applied research in Life Sciences at DeeperInsights. She has been leading the work at DI on computer-vision applications and has been working in close collaboration with Smith+Nephew for several projects. Her background has a strong Biomedical Engineering profile and includes a PhD in KU Leuven, a PostDoc at INESCTEC, and experience as an assistant professor at FEUP. She has also been an invited speaker at international conferences.
